Hamburg Area Historical Society is a community built around the history and geography of Hamburg Pennsylvania and the Hamburg Area School District including Shoemakersville, Port Clinton, Strausstown, and Shartlesville areas. We collect books, news articles, ancestry, and other resources to share with members of the society. Anyone interested in the region can be a member no matter where they currently live. Did you know that a Hamburg native forever watches over the battlefield at Gettysburg near the “high watermark” of Pickett’s infamous charge? Private Joseph Lindermuth was a member of the 1st PA Volunteer Cavalry, a unit held in reserve, ready to counterattack if the Confederates broke through the Union line. Private Lindermuth, fully equipped and on one knee, posed as the model for his unit’s memorial, located on Hancock Avenue, near the “Angle.” He is buried in Auburn.
